AMD FSR 4.1 Support Extended to Radeon RX 7000 Series GPUs

AMD has fulfilled its pledge by releasing FSR 4.1 support for Radeon RX 7000-series graphics cards via its newest Adrenalin drivers. This development comes after an accidental early release of the source code last year. The updated driver set, version 26.2.2, primarily focuses on this significant FSR enhancement, with minor additions like game support for Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced and Doom: The Dark Ages | Revelations. For many users, the improved FSR 4.1 is a more compelling feature, elevating the quality of AI-driven upscaling and frame generation to a level that rivals Nvidia's DLSS 4.5 suite.

In May, AMD had indicated that its advanced FSR algorithms would arrive for RDNA 3 cards by June, a promise it has now kept. To activate FSR 4.1 for games lacking native support, users can enable it through an override option within Adrenalin, provided the game already supports FSR 3.1. It is important to acknowledge that the performance of FSR 4.1 on RDNA 3-based cards is anticipated to be slightly lower than on RDNA 4 models. This expectation stems from the fact that RX 7000 series cards have less robust matrix operation capabilities compared to their RX 9000 counterparts. Consequently, while RDNA 3 cards will still benefit from a performance uplift, the overall visual fidelity or raw performance gain might not be as pronounced as on RDNA 4 hardware.

Despite these differences, FSR 4.1 on RDNA 3 is expected to deliver a visually superior experience compared to FSR 3.1. Furthermore, AMD has announced plans to extend FSR 4.1 support to RX 6000-series graphics cards next year, offering a future upgrade path for users of older hardware, especially given the current high prices of PC components. The timely release of FSR 4.1 for RDNA 3 coincides with the launch of the Steam Machine, revealing a collaboration between Valve and AMD to integrate FSR 4 into the device, although a precise release date for this integration remains unconfirmed beyond a general 'coming soon' announcement.

This update reaffirms AMD's commitment to continuous improvement in visual technologies for its graphics card lineup. Users of Radeon RX 7000 series cards can now enjoy enhanced gaming experiences, and the planned expansion to RX 6000 series next year will further broaden the accessibility of these advancements.
