Augenschein Elevates Production with Star-Driven Films
Augenschein, a German production firm led by Jonas Katzenstein and Maximilian Leo, is significantly expanding its cinematic endeavors. The company is now focusing on larger-scale Hollywood productions, featuring higher budgets and attracting acclaimed actors such as Anne Hathaway, Ethan Hawke, and Kristen Stewart. This strategic shift follows their recent successes with films like "Mother Mary" and "The Weight," marking a new phase of growth and ambition in the international film industry.
The company's upward trajectory is clearly demonstrated by its recent high-profile productions. "Mother Mary," starring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Cole, garnered considerable attention. This was swiftly followed by "The Weight," a compelling film featuring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe, which made its debut at prestigious film festivals like Sundance and Berlin earlier this year, successfully securing distribution. These projects underscore Augenschein's commitment to producing impactful and commercially viable cinema.
Adding to their impressive slate, Augenschein recently commenced production on "Flesh of the Gods," a vampire thriller set in 1980s Los Angeles. This film boasts a stellar cast including Kristen Stewart and Wagner Moura, with Panos Cosmatos directing from a screenplay by Andrew Kevin Walker. The production spans multiple international locations, with filming taking place in Tenerife and Germany, alongside plate shots captured in Los Angeles. Maximilian Leo describes the film as a dreamlike, almost ethereal experience, blending elements of "Eyes Wide Shut" and "The Lost Boys." He assures that it will deliver sufficient gore for genre enthusiasts while maintaining a deeply atmospheric and stylish aesthetic, positioning it for a strong showing at a major film festival. A24 has already acquired the U.S. distribution rights for the picture.
Another significant production for Augenschein is the airplane thriller "Left Seat," featuring Michelle Rodriguez and Richard Gere, under the direction of Ben Younger. This film, which recently concluded principal photography in Bavaria, is currently in post-production. Augenschein is co-producing "Left Seat" with Jason Michael Berman's A/Vantage and Mandalay Pictures, with Anton managing international sales and WME Independent handling North American distribution.
The company also supports smaller, independent projects like "Bloody Tennis," currently being screened to buyers at Cannes. These films allow Augenschein to fully finance their ventures, embracing a filmmaker-driven approach that prioritizes creative vision while leveraging European funding to mitigate risks. This strategy enables them to explore bolder, more artistic projects that appeal to top-tier talent, even if they don't explicitly fit traditional market demands. Leo emphasizes that their model allows for greater creative freedom and the potential for significant upside, all while safeguarding filmmakers from excessive financial exposure.
Leo notes that the German film incentives have played a crucial role in this expansion, particularly the increase in tax shelter yield to 30%. This change has fostered a busy production environment in Germany, making it an attractive location for filming, especially when combined with regional funds. For projects under their control, filming in Germany often results in higher quality for lower net costs compared to Eastern Europe. However, they remain flexible, utilizing international locations like the Canary Islands for their diverse landscapes when a specific aesthetic, such as the Southern Californian look for "Flesh of the Gods," is required. This adaptability allows them to craft unique realities for their films, particularly in genres like science fiction or period pieces where creative distortion of reality is key, providing ample room for artistic expression.
Despite a challenging and volatile financing market, particularly in North America, Augenschein has managed to elevate its standing within the industry over the past year. The success of "The Weight" at Sundance and Berlin, the premiere of "Mother Mary" in New York and London, and the ongoing production of "Flesh of the Gods" have collectively boosted their profile. This increased visibility has led to collaborations with more renowned filmmakers from the U.S. and U.K., and has empowered Augenschein to pursue more ambitious projects. Ironically, to attract high-caliber talent and leverage funding effectively within a spending-based system, their project budgets have increased, proving that strong packages can still secure significant investment even in a tough market.
