Bungie Unveils "Marathon" Season 2: Free Play Week, New Content, and Gameplay Enhancements
Bungie is set to launch the second season of its extraction shooter, Marathon, offering players an exciting "Open Play Week" where the game will be freely accessible across PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X from June 2 to June 9. This initiative aims to welcome new players while providing a fresh start for veterans, as all progress from Season 1 will be reset, ensuring an equitable experience for everyone diving into the new season.
This announcement came via a new developer insights video and an accompanying blog post published on Wednesday. During this free play period, all progress made by players will be retained for future gameplay. Additionally, Bungie indicated that Marathon would be available at a reduced price around the commencement of Season 2. The studio views this event as an excellent opportunity for all players to experience the game's new content and mechanics on a level playing field, particularly following a complete seasonal reset that clears player inventories and progression.
Brenton Woodrow, the senior design lead, shared his vision for the new season, expressing a desire for players to recapture the initial magic of Marathon's launch. He emphasized the thrill of discovery, where everything feels new and the value of items is yet to be determined, fostering exciting new narratives and journeys through seasonal progression. This design philosophy aims to reignite a sense of wonder and challenge for the player base.
The developers have characterized the narrative theme for Season 2 as "escalation," focusing on the counterattacks launched by the UESC forces against the Runners. As this conflict intensifies, so does the influence of the Anomaly, an extraterrestrial entity that distorts physics and transforms the local ecosystem. This culminates in a new playable area for Season 2, a nocturnal rendition of Dire Marsh. Developers hinted that this new map would offer a survival horror experience, featuring fewer players and increased environmental hazards, with the Anomaly introducing novel obstacles to player movement. This nighttime version of Dire Marsh will be available during the first week of Season 2, rotating with its daytime counterpart every 90 minutes thereafter.
Season 2 also introduces the Sentinel, a new defensive Runner Shell. This shell is equipped with an automated laser platform designed to intercept enemy projectiles and provides a weapon handling boost to nearby allies. The Sentinel's tactical ability includes deploying a Snare Mine, a proximity explosive. Its passive trait, the Castle Doctrine, enhances resistance to splash damage and improves close-range weapon handling when surrounded. Additionally, the Prey Tracker ability allows the Sentinel to detect moving targets on radar, making it an ideal choice for navigating the challenges of the new Dire Marsh map with shotguns.
Bungie also mentioned several gameplay refinements aimed at "shaving off the rough edges," specifically addressing the difficulty balance of certain contracts. Alongside these tweaks, faction progression has been streamlined to offer a more meaningful impact on player experience. This indicates a commitment to improving overall gameplay flow and reward systems within the game.
A significant new feature in Marathon is the Cradle system, which allows players to enhance their Runner Shells. By empowering the WEAVEworms that form their biocybernetic bodies, players can boost their Shell's stats across six categories and unlock powerful perks. The Matter Converter enables players to transform various in-game items into Cradle experience, which is then used to upgrade a Shell's stats. This system is designed to facilitate diverse playstyles, allowing players to tailor their characters to their preferred strategies. All progress, however, is reset with each new season, so players are encouraged to utilize their Season 1 gear before the upcoming reset.
