The DC Universe (DCU) is poised for an even more unconventional turn with a new, as-yet-unnamed series spotlighting the enduring Flash antagonist, Gorilla Grodd.

Reports late last year initially hinted at this project centering on Daily Planet photojournalist Jimmy Olsen, portrayed by Skyler Gisondo in the 2025 film Superman. This HBO production, conceived by Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, known for their mockumentary American Vandal, was anticipated to feature Olsen prominently. However, Peter Safran, co-chairman and CEO of DC Studios, recently confirmed a shift in focus, announcing that the series is now a 'Gorilla Grodd show' with production slated to commence later this year.

Safran shared these details at the Supergirl premiere in Rio de Janeiro, emphasizing that the Gorilla Grodd/Jimmy Olsen project is one of numerous DC Studios initiatives currently in development. While he refrained from confirming a new Justice League film, Safran reiterated the studio's dedication to existing announced projects such as Supergirl, Lanterns, Clayface, Man of Tomorrow, and The Batman Part 2, alongside the introduction of Batman into the DCU through Brave and the Bold. He playfully acknowledged the revelation about the Gorilla Grodd series, indicating it was perhaps an unplanned announcement. Echoing James Gunn's previous statements, Safran underscored the importance of meticulous script development and storytelling, prioritizing quality over speed. This commitment suggests the Gorilla Grodd/Jimmy Olsen series has a robust narrative, and introducing a telepathic gorilla into a leading role is sure to make it one of the DCU's most captivating ventures. Gorilla Grodd, created by John Broome and Carmine Infantino, first appeared in The Flash #106 in 1959 and has a rich history across various DC animated and video game adaptations.
