The upcoming "Lord of Hatred" expansion for Diablo 4 marks a significant shift in the game's seasonal structure. Instead of a traditional, content-rich new season alongside the expansion, Blizzard has opted for a minimalist approach with the "Season of Reckoning." This strategic decision aims to keep the spotlight firmly on the substantial new campaign and the overhauled game systems introduced in the expansion.

While the "Season of Reckoning" will technically be a new season, allowing players to create fresh seasonal characters and progress through levels, it will not introduce exclusive temporary powers or a distinct narrative. The primary focus remains on the extensive changes brought by the expansion, including two new character classes—Warlocks and Paladins—reworked skill trees and items for existing classes, and a robust item crafting system through the Horadric Cube. Despite the streamlined seasonal content, Blizzard is compensating players with an abundance of rewards, offering enough materials to craft several mythic unique items and various cosmetic additions, like a hellish roots-themed pet.

This streamlined seasonal model is a deliberate move by Blizzard, acknowledging that the "Lord of Hatred" expansion itself provides ample new gameplay experiences. The developer's blog post confirms this departure from previous seasonal formats, assuring players that future seasons will revert to the established pattern. The expansion and the new season will launch in quick succession, with the expansion becoming available 30 minutes before the season begins, anticipating a rush of players eager to dive into the new content and confront Mephisto.
