Bringing a Beloved MMORPG to Nintendo Fans

Naoki Yoshida, the esteemed producer of the massively popular online role-playing game Final Fantasy XIV, has frequently expressed his ambition for a Nintendo platform release. Today, at the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival Keynote event in Anaheim, this aspiration became a reality. Alongside Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu, Yoshida confirmed the game's arrival on the Nintendo Switch 2, delighting fans worldwide.

August Launch with Early Access Benefits

Final Fantasy XIV Online is set to launch on the Switch 2 in August. The release will commence with an exclusive one-month free early access period, likely intended to conduct server stability tests under live player conditions. Following this initial free trial, continued access to the game will necessitate a subscription.

Understanding the Subscription Model for Switch 2

A notable aspect of the Switch 2 version is its unique subscription requirement. Unlike other platforms such as PS5, PS4, Xbox, and PC, where a single subscription covers access, the Switch 2 iteration demands its own separate subscription. Nevertheless, existing subscribers will benefit from a 50% reduction on the Switch 2 subscription fee. Players will retain their established characters and account progress. It is important to note that a Nintendo Switch Online subscription is not required to play Final Fantasy XIV on this new platform.

On-Stage Sneak Peek and Visuals

During the keynote presentation, Yoshi-P showcased a Switch 2 device, demonstrating his Lalafell character in-game. From a distance, the game's visuals appeared consistent with its established aesthetic. Further close-up demonstrations are anticipated to provide a clearer picture of the game's performance and graphical fidelity on the new console.

Introducing the Next Major Expansion: Evercold

Coinciding with the Switch 2 announcement, Yoshi-P also unveiled the newest expansion, "Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold," scheduled for release in January 2027. This will be the seventh major story addition to the game, following the critically acclaimed expansions A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood, Shadowbringers, Endwalker, and Dawntrail.

Future Details and Free Trial Expansion

More detailed information regarding the Switch 2 version, including specifics on its features and the functionality of the Free Trial, is expected soon.
