The 60th annual Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is set to celebrate the notable careers of acclaimed actress, director, and screenwriter Maggie Gyllenhaal, alongside the distinguished actor, director, and screenwriter Jesse Eisenberg. Festival artistic director Karel Och highlighted their “trans-Atlantic” cinematic sensibility, noting their exceptional ability to interweave American and European narrative styles, enriched with humor, intellect, and a distinctive worldview.

During the opening ceremony, Maggie Gyllenhaal, a Golden Globe recipient and two-time Academy Award nominee, will be honored with the President’s Award. She will also present her latest directorial endeavor, “The Bride!” (2026). This film, which she wrote, directed, and produced, offers a fresh interpretation of the classic Frankenstein narrative, drawing inspiration from both the 1935 film “Bride of Frankenstein” and Mary Shelley’s original novel. Eisenberg, a two-time Oscar nominee, will also receive the President’s Award. The festival will screen his film “The Double,” directed by Richard Ayoade, in which he plays the central character.

Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut, “The Lost Daughter,” based on Elena Ferrante’s novel, earned three Academy Award nominations, including Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Eisenberg’s directorial journey includes “When You Finish Saving the World,” which premiered at Cannes, and his critically acclaimed “A Real Pain” (2024). His upcoming project, “The Debut,” featuring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti, is slated for a Fall 2026 release, for which he also composed the music and lyrics.

These honors at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival not only recognize Maggie Gyllenhaal and Jesse Eisenberg’s individual achievements but also celebrate their profound influence on global cinema. Their dedication to storytelling, both in front of and behind the camera, serves as an inspiring example for aspiring artists, underscoring the power of creative expression to transcend boundaries and enrich cultural discourse.
