This annual cinematic event is slated to enchant audiences in Valletta, Malta's vibrant capital, from June 21 to June 28. Following a monumental celebration last year marking a century of filmmaking on the island, dating back to the 1925 production of 'Sons of the Sea,' expectations are high for an equally impressive program. Festival Director Pierre Agius and Curator Mark Adams have meticulously crafted this year's theme, 'Beyond Together,' aiming to transcend previous achievements.

The festival's film schedule is set to be significantly broadened, moving from three to five distinct categories. These include the 'Big Screen Competition,' showcasing prominent mainstream films; the 'Mediterranean Competition,' which highlights new cinematic works from the region, emphasizing local narratives and talent; 'Mare Nostrum,' dedicated to films with an environmental message; 'Best of the World,' bringing global cinematic novelties to Malta; and 'Malta Focus,' featuring local short and feature films that spotlight the island's burgeoning talent pool.

Beyond the diverse film screenings, attendees can look forward to engaging Q&A sessions with filmmakers at Valletta's Embassy Cinema. Additionally, two enchanting outdoor screening venues, the Upper Barrakka Gardens and Fort Ricasoli Counterguard, will host special events. The festival will also offer a range of custom programming, including insightful panels and masterclasses led by esteemed figures from the film industry. A distinguished jury composed of creative professionals will review the competition entries, ultimately selecting the recipients of the prestigious Golden Bee Awards. These accolades will be presented at a grand gala event on June 28. Last year, the festival had the honor of hosting Russell Crowe, who received a film legend award, a tribute acknowledging his impactful work, notably his role in 'Gladiator,' which was filmed in Malta.

The theme 'Beyond Together' perfectly encapsulates our direction—fostering collaborations, drawing in new productions, and firmly establishing Malta as a serious and competitive contender in the global film arena.'

Agius further elaborated, 'Our objective for 2026 is unambiguous: to significantly enhance both the audience's experience and the festival's industry relevance. By broadening our program and strengthening international partnerships, we are cultivating a festival that is both culturally profound and globally connected.' In a gesture of goodwill, all proceeds from ticket sales for the screenings will be generously donated to Puttinu Cares, a local Maltese charity dedicated to supporting cancer patients.
