Micron Enhances AI Chip Production Capabilities with New P5 Site Acquisition
Micron Technology, a key player in the semiconductor industry, is significantly bolstering its production capabilities with the recent acquisition of Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation's P5 site. This strategic move, announced on March 15, follows an agreement reached in January 2026 and marks a pivotal moment for Micron's expansion in the advanced memory sector. The newly acquired facility is set to become an integral part of Micron's extensive vertically integrated mega-campus in Taichung, located approximately 15 miles away. This integration will add nearly 300,000 square feet of state-of-the-art cleanroom capacity, specifically designed for 300mm wafer production, underscoring Micron's commitment to scaling up its manufacturing operations.
The company is wasted no time, with the immediate commencement of retrofitting operations for the existing cleanrooms at the P5 site. This rapid deployment aims to accelerate the facility's readiness, with the first product shipments anticipated to begin in fiscal year 2028. Furthermore, Micron's ambitious growth strategy includes plans for constructing an additional site in Tongluo before the end of fiscal 2026. This subsequent expansion will contribute another 270,000 square feet of cleanroom space, further amplifying the new facility's overall output potential. The primary objective behind these significant investments is to enhance the production of advanced DRAM products, such as High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), which are crucial for supporting the burgeoning demands of artificial intelligence applications.
The acquisition of the P5 site and the ongoing expansion initiatives are poised to solidify Micron's competitive edge in the global semiconductor market. By increasing its capacity for advanced memory solutions, Micron is not only responding to current market needs but also strategically positioning itself for future opportunities driven by the exponential growth of AI technologies. This proactive approach ensures that Micron remains at the forefront of innovation and supply, contributing to the advancement of technology and the digital economy.
