Volvo Simplifies EV Charging with New 'Plug & Charge' Feature

Volvo is stepping up its game in electric vehicle convenience with the rollout of its new “Plug & Charge” functionality. This feature, already active in the EX90 SUV and slated for the upcoming EX60, aims to make recharging as effortless as possible for drivers, removing the hassle of traditional payment methods. It marks a significant advancement for Volvo in the competitive EV market.

Volvo's Seamless EV Charging Experience Unveiled

Volvo, a pioneer in automotive safety and innovation, has introduced its groundbreaking “Plug & Charge” feature, beginning with its sophisticated EX90 electric SUV. This development promises to redefine the charging experience for EV owners. As of June 21, Volvo EX90 drivers can enjoy automatic payment processing simply by connecting their vehicle to a compatible charging station. This seamless integration is also set to become available for the highly anticipated Volvo EX60, which boasts an impressive range of up to 400 miles, upon its release later this year.

For those new to electric vehicles, “Plug & Charge” simplifies the charging process by automatically handling payment transactions the moment the charging cable is plugged in. This eliminates the conventional steps of swiping a credit card or navigating through mobile applications specific to various charging networks – a common inconvenience for many EV users. Tesla, for instance, has long utilized a similar system for its Superchargers, where payments for non-Tesla vehicles are managed via their app, and Tesla vehicles benefit directly from “Plug & Charge.”

The EX60 will feature an NACS port, enabling native compatibility with Tesla Superchargers. However, it's worth noting that even Tesla's V3 stations may not fully utilize the EX60's remarkable 370-kilowatt peak charging capability. A Volvo powertrain engineer, speaking at the EX60's launch, indicated that the vehicle might initially experience a peak charging speed of 120-kW on 400-volt chargers, due to the need for its rear inverter to convert current to 800-volts. Enhanced 150 kW charging at Tesla Superchargers is expected at a later stage. Additionally, EX90 owners will be able to access Tesla charging points through a CCS-to-NACS adapter.

Beyond Tesla's network, Volvo's “Plug & Charge” will extend its reach to IONNA charging stations across the US. These stations are equipped with 400 kW stalls, designed to optimize the EX60's rapid charging performance, allowing it to reach an 80 percent charge from 10 percent in just 16 minutes. Volvo's integrated Google Automotive System and the Volvo Cars App will further enhance this convenience by helping drivers locate compatible charging stations and plan routes accordingly.

Jim Nichols, Head of Product, Technology & Consumer Offer at Volvo Car Americas, emphasized that both the EX60 and EX90 embody Volvo's forward-thinking approach to mobility, combining safety, sustainability, and user-focused technology. He stated that the introduction of “Plug & Charge” will provide Volvo drivers with an even more streamlined ownership experience, making public charging as straightforward as plugging in and walking away.

Although Volvo is catching up in offering “Plug & Charge,” the EX60 appears to be a groundbreaking EV, particularly in its charging specifications and impressive range. With a potential range of 400 miles and a 370 kW peak charging speed, it is poised to be a formidable contender in the electric vehicle market.
